2017 R1AA AND PALARONG PAMBANSA

THE Dagupan City Sports Commission (DCSC) has set its eyes on earning medals in wushu competitions in the next Region 1 Athletic Association and Palarong Pambansa.

DCSC Commissioner Finnela T. Sim said the city government already met with Philippine Olympic Committee Treasurer Julian Camacho and Wushu Federation of the Philippines Vice-President Samson Co when they arrived in the city as the city’s guests last week.

They were joined by Jessie Aligaga, a three-time World Champion and a Gold Medalist in the 2013 Sea Games, who was invited specifically to prepare a training program for the city’s athletes.

“They were here on our invitation to help us train our athletes in wushu.” said Sim.

“We are happy to be here in Dagupan for the training of the city’s wushu team. We brought with us one of the best coaches in wushu who will prepare the program for Dagupan so we could send our best athletes not just in the R1AA but also in the Palarong Pambansa. We should have a good result under the program,” said Co.

The Dagupan team never had a team to compete in wushu and in archery so the Dagupan City Athletic Association (DCAA) included the two events in this year’s sports competition.

Sim said the DCSC will meet with all the school principals of pubic and private schools in the city next month for the recruitment of athletes aged 12 years and below for wushu.

“The athletes who will pass the try-out will undergo rigid training,” said Sim.

Wushu competition is divided into two disciplines– the taolu and sanda.

Taolu is more on exhibition while sanda is for full contact. The athletes will train in both disciplines. (With report from CIO)
