Presence of Chinese, Taiwanese in W. Pangasinan probed
ARE the Chinese and Taiwanese nationals engaged in aquaculture in the province engaged in illegal drug activities?
This is what Paul Verzosa, alien control officer Bureau of Immigration officer in Dagupan is looking after receiving reports from four mayors in western Pangasinan who reported suspicious activities of the foreigners.
He said the mayors have expressed apprehension over the sudden proliferation of fish cages and increased presence of Chinese and Taiwanese nationals engaging in aquaculture, constructing fish pens from Sual all the way to Anda towns.
Verzosa said one mayor noted how they grow bangus (milkfish) in fish pens or fish cages, making the fishes overstay in these fish structures to grow to uneconomical sizes that guarantee losses.
“Once these are loaded in bancas, the Chinese take over, bring them to warehouses that are off-limits to Filipinos, to package these. That’s the other problem,” he said.
The harvested bangus are usually overweight, “one bangus weighing two kilos,” he added “May palaman ang bituka, yung tiyan,” he said.
“The packaged bangus are delivered to Manila but there are not available in public markets, that’s another red flag. And we do not know where these are sent,” he added.
Verzosa told the KBP Forum that the surveillance is continuing. (Tita Roces)
