URDANETA CITY—SM Prime Holdings Inc (SMPH), the country’s leading shopping mall developer, is set to start the construction of its new mall here in October.

Mayor Amadeo Perez IV confirmed that the company has secured necessary permits for the mall’s construction.

The four-storey SM Urdaneta will be built on a five-hectare lot along the national highway in Barangay Nancayasan beside the Land Bank of the Philippines building, he said.

It is expected to be finished in a year, Perez added.

“This is expected to boost our income here plus employment priority for our residents who are qualified for various job openings,” he said.

He said plans are in place to address flow of traffic in the area as a local mall is situated in front of it and the public market is only few meters away from it.

The new mall set to rise here will be the second owned by SMPH in Pangasinan, the first being SM City Rosales in Rosales town.

Urdaneta City is the center of business in eastern part of Pangasinan.

The company has previously acquired a more than 10-hectare lot in Barangay Anonas this city for a mall several years ago but the construction was stalled due to some legal concerns.

Perez said the company will instead build a low-cost housing project in Anonas. (Tita Roces)
