The Kapitan and the Tanod

THE barangay kapitan may be the low man on the totem pole, but he/she is no less powerful than the mayor when it comes to controlling activities in the village.

Like most who have come to understand and accept what goes on in a community, we know nothing goes past the kapitan without his knowledge, and more importantly, his imprimatur, whether an activity is for charity or whether it is for illegal purposes.

Going further, the kapitan knows who the petty thieves are, who the wife beaters and bullies are, who the regular drunks and jueteng collectors are, and most particularly, who the drug pushers and users are.

More importantly, the kapitan knows if his/her village is drug infected or not.

Since, all police stations have already piled up on information and intel reports on drug personalities after all the Oplan Tokhang they did, how much do the police know about the Kapitans? What was the kapitan doing all the time when drug trading was active and before the war on drugs was declared?

If there were more than 10 confirmed drug pushers in the barangay, in all likelihood, the barangay kapitan was protecting the drug trade.

Ask the lowly barangay tanod. He knows.

Fighting the President

CAN one fight the President?  Or, to be direct to the point, can one fight President Duterte?  Yes, of course.  This is a free country.  But can one defeat President Duterte?  Seemingly impossible, if we go by what’s happening to Sen. De Lima right now.  Within mere hours after De Lima unleashed a self-confessed hitman to accuse Mr. Duterte of multiple murders in Davao, she was ousted chair of the Senate committee on justice and human rights via an overwhelming 16-4-2, yes-no-abstain vote.  Was Mr. Duterte behind that?   Next, Justice Secretary Aguirre paraded at least six high-profile inmates in Muntinlupa accusing De Lima of involvement in drugs and collecting drug money for her senatorial fund campaign last May.  As the thriller-drama rages on, swimming in the people’s hearts and minds is who to believe between De Lima and Aguirre/Mr. Duterte.  You have one right now?
