Most inmates at Prov’l jail detained for drug offenses
ATTEMPTS TO SMUGGLE SHABU CONTINUE
THE Pangasinan Provincial Jail has tightened its security measures after foiling another attempt by drug couriers to smuggle in shabu to inmates.
Provincial Jail Warden Ferdinand Natividad said he already ordered strict inspection of foods and pabaon brought in by the families and friends before these are handed to the inmates.
Jail guards recently discovered two sachets of suspected shabu found inside a bottle of sandwich spread from an unidentified courier who hurriedly ran off.
The inmate intended to receive the bottle was promptly transferred to the Bureau Jail Management and Penology in San Carlos City after the incident.
Meanwhile, a random inspection done by jail officials caught two inmates sniffing shabu inside their cell. The confiscated shabu weighed 0. 4 gram.
Cases of violation of the Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002 was filed against the involved inmates.
The inmates, however, protested the strict measures adopted in inspecting and sorting our food and personal items brought in by relatives and resorted to a noise barrage to convey their protest.
Based on provincial jail records, sixty percent of the 430 inmates are facing illegal drugs charges.
Some are ex-convicts from National Bilibid Prison and detained at the provincial jail on drug charges. Other inmates are facing robbery, murder and homicide cases.
Natividad described the provincial jail not merely as a custodial but also a rehabilitation center. (Nora Dominguez)
