Fishermen risked fishing in Boro at night
‘BORO’, here we come!
This was what was in uppermost minds of fishermen from Barangay Cato in the town of Infanta after learning of the decision of the United Nations (UN) Arbitral Tribunal favoring the Philippines.
Charlito Maniago, chairperson of Barangay Cato, said the village’s fishermen have started to prepare their bancas for their long overdue return to ‘Boro’ (local reference to Scarborough Shoal) at daybreak.
The constant bullying of the Chinese Coast Guard with the use of water had kept them away from Bora for years at least during the daytime.
She revealed that the village’s fishermen still fished in the area where the Chinese Navy couldn’t see them at night using their payaw to catch fish.
According to Maniago, although worried, the fishermen of Barangay Cato will attempt to move to Boro any time soon.
She said, 80% of the residents in Barangay Cato are fishermen and Boro is not just rich source for fish but this also served as shelter for fishermen during typhoon. (Nora Dominguez)
