THE provincial government is prepared for the onset of the La Niña phenomenon.

This was the assurance given by Avenix Arenas, Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (PDRRMO) training and information officer during the KBP Forum last week.

He said PDRRMO’s disaster plan, contingency plan, among other plans, are ready for implementation but still prayed that La Nina will not have a too severe impact this year.

She said the stockpiling of relief goods and medicines have been taken cared of by the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office and the Provincial Health Office while the coordination for evacuation centers are being finalized.

She added that the PDRRMO has three aluminum rescue boats, eight fiberglass rescue boats, and all the basic disaster, response, and clearance operations tools.

“We’re also a recipient of the JICA geocloud,” she said.

Last March, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA)-sponsored project on the integrated geographic information system (GIS) products was launched in the province of Pangasinan.

The project, sought to improve the disaster risk reduction and management (DRRM) of the province, particularly of three towns namely Lingayen, Binmaley, and Dagupan City and improves the capability of the local government units in sharing DRRM information, evacuation, and instructions to achieve zero casualties on the ground.

Meanwhile, the PDRRMO has been conducting site visitations and coordination workshops, in various towns to look into the preparedness of each town and city.

In the same forum, Arnold Santos, senior research scientist at the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) satellite office in Urdaneta City, said the DOST has an ongoing disaster emergency warning system projects in Alaminos City and Mabini.

This warning system, in addition to the Project Noah website, is a disaster preparedness tool which uses water-level sensor. (Johanne Macob)
