100-year-old Lola is oldest living Dagupeña
LEONCIA Villacaria Arenos was placed in the limelight during the celebration of the 69th Agew na Dagupan when she was cited as the “Oldest Living Dagupeño.”
Arenos, also fondly called by her neighbors and friends as Bai Leoncia, was born on January 16, 1916 and is a resident of Barangay Lasip Grande and that makes her 100 years and five months old.
She and her husband, the late Liborio Gutierrez Arenos who died in 1986, have 10 children (five boys and five girls) but she said she could no longer have a sure count of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren anymore.
She said she’s been told, however, she already has great-great grandchildren.
One of her daughters, Milagros Villacaria Arenos, 67, has devoted her life taking care of her. According to her, they were originally from San Pedro East, Rosales, but moved to Dagupan in 1956.
Her parents were former vendors at a bus terminal here in the city.
Milagros revealed her mother is a vegetarian, which is the secret to her long life.
“Puro gulay ang kinakain noon, walang vetsin,” she shared.
Last July 2014, Arenos experienced a mild stroke, which caused her inability to walk. Until now, Milagros is a vendor in a nearby school to support their needs.
Bai Leoncia received a plaque of recognition, a wheelchair and Php10,000 cash. (Nora Susara, OJT)
