Comelec: No big thing

DISCOVERED USED MATERIALS

THE Commission on Elections (Comelec) downplayed a report over the discovery of alleged election paraphernalia in one of the abandoned buildings in Alaminos City purporting to be an attempt to rig the last election.

Provincial Elections Supervisor Joel Gines said there was nothing amiss with the discovery of used election paraphernalia, which included brown envelopes in one of the buildings in the city proper.

“It’s no big thing… these were actually trash, which may not have been disposed off properly by members of the Board of Election Inspectors (BEIs) before they left the polling centers.” Gines said.

He said he suspects that a group may have collected them and set it up to make it appear that the discovered used materials were used to cheat in order to cast doubt on the outcome of the election.

These discovered items have been turned over to the custody of the Alaminos Police that initiated an investigation to trace the suspects behind the malicious scheme.

Vouching for the integrity of the elections in Pangasinan, Gines maintained that the election in Pangasinan was peaceful and orderly and no irregularity was reported in any of the more than 1,000 clustered precincts before, during and after the elections.

P/Supt. Jackie Candelario, deputy police director for operations, confirmed Gines’ report and only two reported mauling incidents could be related to the election. (Leonardo Micua)
