LINGAYEN— More youths are beginning to write in Pangasinense or the Pangasinan language as evidenced by the growing number of participants in the Kurit Panlunggaring literary writing contest each year.

Santiago Villafania, Pangasinan poet and a judge of the contest, noted this during the Kurit Panlunggaring Awarding Ceremony held on April 5, 2016 at the Sison Auditorium.

“Compared to previous years, now we have many new contestants who are young,” he said, “We received 22 entries for the youth division this year,” he added.

The winners in this year’s Kurit Panlunggaring Pangasinan literary contest, arranged from first to third places, are the following Alvin Garcia, Liera Aguinaldo, and John Patrick Manangan (poetry writing- youth division); Angela Kate Estrada, Denson Padlan, and Jireh Ganggangan (essay writing- youth division); Mark Anthony Austria, Alma Nepascua, and Gerald Pagodpod (poetry writing- adult division); Pagodpod, Dionisia Fernandez, and Alex Romeo Fernandez (children’s story writing- adult division); Alex Romeo Fernandez, Rogelio De Guzman, and Dionisia Fernandez (short story writing- adult division).

Alex Romeo Fernandez was also awarded the Hall of Fame award for short story writing category.

Villafania, the 2010 ASNA Awardee for Literature and member of Poetic Sanctuaries Pangasinan, said the contest “gave fresh breath of life to our literature, to be at par with other languages.”

‘Kurit’ is the local term for writing while ‘panlunggaring’ is a term coined by Villafania that was taken from the combination of the local words Pangasinan and Matalunggaring.

Last year, the provincial government published an anthology of the winning entries in the first three years.

The Writers International Network (WIN) Canada recognized in November 2015 the top promoters of the Pangasinan native language including Villafania and Governor Amado Espino Jr., among others.

Gov. Espino was citied for the efforts of the provincial government of Pangasinan, under his leadership, for promoting cultural and heritage conservation through its various programs, projects, and activities like the Kurit Panlunggaring, the only literary contest in Pangasinan language.
