MANGALDAN—At least 31 participants in the Archdiocesan Youth Day Camp (AYDC) held here were hospitalized last Tuesday, April 19, due to food poisoning.

Dr. Ofelia Rivera, municipal health officer, said some of the victims started to experience stomach ache after their welcome dinner while the others had loose bowel movement (LBM) and vomiting on April 20.

“They were brought in our health center but one of them was endorsed to the Pangasinan Provincial Hospital (PPH) due to fever”, said Rivera.

AYDC has 1, 600 campers from all over the province and neighboring provinces hosted by the St. Thomas Aquinas Parish Church.

Rivera said the 30 victims were immediately released and returned to the camp after they were given rehydrating solutions while the other remained under the care of PPH.

The municipal health office is still investigating which among the foods served in their dinner caused the poisoning.

She said initial investigation showed the preparation of the food was okay, so they are looking at the possibility that some of the campers ate their food late (between 8 pm to 9 pm), although the food was served at 6 pm.

“Since the weather is so hot, foods are easily spoiled and bacteria easily invade these foods”, said Rivera.

Meanwhile, Rivera also warned of heat exhaustion and heat stroke as five cases were already recorded from among the campers. (Hilda Austria)
