Ambulant vendors given negokarts to improve business, boost earnings

DAGUPAN CITY – At least 60 ambulant vendors are now doing good business selling street food in front of the CSI Market Square.
This after they received Negokarts (Negosyo sa Kariton) from the Dagupan City government and the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) so that they can earn more for their respective families.
“I am happy to see that business is doing well for our small vendors. We will continue to support our small entrepreneurs because their success is also our success”, a jubilant Mayor Belen T. Fernandez said.
The food carts were the city’s way of helping small entrepreneurs earn a decent living under the Project B.EL.E.N. or Building Entrepreneurship and Livelihood Enhancement.
“These food carts came just in time for the Bangus Festival when thousands of people flock to the city,” the mayor said.
Fernandez advised the recipients to be hands on with their business in order to succeed.
“On our part we will conduct monthly monitoring to check the status of their negokart business. It’s also important that they maintain cleanliness and good sanitation in order to attract more buyers,” said Fernandez.
Each recipient will be required to undergo training as “Certified Food Handler” and after which will be issued a Blue Card to ensure that the food that they sell passes the sanitation standard.
The negokart will be used only by the recipients and it is not subject for lease, sale or be placed as collateral and if the recipient fails to use the cart in a span of two months or takes good care of it, the city earns the right to take the cart back and award it to another beneficiary.
“I love eating street foods ever since I was in college and even today I always stop by to buy my favorites like “turon”, “okoy”, fishball, corn and barbecue.” said Fernandez.
While thanking DOLE for the project, Mayor Fernandez lauded the NegoKart program as it touched the lives of small vendors and their families. (Joseph C. Bacani/CIO)
