There will be enough fish for everyone, say
HOLY WEEK CONSUMPTION
WILL the region have enough fish supply for the Holy Week when the demand is expected to be high?
“Definitely, yes!” came the quick reply from Nestor Domenden, regional director of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, to The PUNCH’s query last Thursday.
He said fishponds in Region 1 still yield good production despite the summer heat.
He said the supply will be affected only if it suddenly rains because that’s when temperature drops and fish resistance becomes weak. “This will result in forced or emergency harvest,” he added.
Domenden said large fish producers normally plan six months ahead so if their target harvest time is March, they start fish seeding in September to October.
He said bangus and other fish growers have anticipated the demand increase and have calendared their growing time for the anticipated harvest period in time for the Holy Week observance.
He said not only bangus but supply of other fish products supply is enough to support the demand.
Although there are fishponds that are reported by some newsmen to have dried, Domenden said “these could not be totally attributed to the El Nino”.
“You cannot easily claim it’s because of El Nino,” he added. He said some use this as an excuse.
If the dry spell extends up to August, he said “that would be the only time when we can say that Region 1 is hit by El Nino”.
Total fish production in Region 1 in 2015 was 142,00 metric tons. (Tita Roces)
