LINGAYEN- The provincial government under of Gov. Amado T. Espino, Jr. has expressed its support to the fisherfolks of Lingayen in addressing the problem brought about by the El Nino phenomenon feared to affect the fishing industry in Pangasinan.

Vice-Governor Ferdinand Z. Calimlim, Jr. who spoke in behalf of Gov. Espino during the first general assembly of the Lingayen Federation of Fisherfolk Organization (LIFFO) held on February 27 at the Pangasinan Training Development Center here, said that the governor has assured to help provide the needs of the fisherfolks to mitigate the problem of dry spell and increase fishery production.

Federation president, Edgar Sison, said that the fisherfolks group has expressed relief as the provincial government has taken measures to help in the mitigation of the dry spell which he said has started drying up 60 percent of the fishponds in Lingayen town.

As an initial assistance, Board Member Amado “Pogi” I. Espino III and Board Member Raul Sison donated water pumps to the federation that the fishermen can use in pumping water into the fishponds which have started drying up since the onset of El Nino last month.

The vice-governor and Board Member Nestor Reyes also gave financial assistance to the LIFFO.

The federation president, however, said that media reports that 60 percent of the river system in the town has dried up is incorrect.

Only fishponds are drying up, not the rivers, he pointed out.

With the assurance from the province to extend its help to the fisherfolks, additional assistance from the province has been reported to be underway.

Provincial Agriculturist Dalisay Moya said that fishery and agriculture are among the priority programs of the Espino administration. |ADV
