PNG national meet set March 7-11

LINGAYEN—The province will host some 2,500 young athletes from all over the country for the holding of the 2016 national championships of the Philippine National Games (PNG) from March 7 to 11 in Pangasinan.

The PNG national championships will kick off with an opening ceremony at 5:00 p.m. of March 7 at the Narciso Ramos Civic and Sports Center (NRSCC) here to be led Gov. Amado Espino Jr., PSC chairman Ricardo Garcia and POC chairman Jose “Peping” Cojuangco.

Senator Edgardo Angara, chair of the Senate committee on sports development, will address the athletes.

The PNG national games was organized by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) in cooperation with the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) to choose the country’s athletes who will represent their country in the coming Southeast Asian Games (SEAG).

The traditional parade of athletes and coaches from the Pangasinan provincial capitol plaza to the NRCSS will precede the opening ceremony.

Pangasinan Provincial Sports Coordinator Modesto Operania said the decision to hold the national sports event in Pangasinan was made by PSC after the latter acknowledged the province’s successful hosting of the Palarong Pambansa in 2012 and the Luzon Leg of Batang Pinoy in 2013, among many others.

The athletes and their coaches began arriving last week and a solidarity meeting among technical officials and coaches will be held in the morning of March 7.

According to Verna Nava Perez, PNG Task Force chair person, the athletes and technical officials will be housed at the NRSCC dormitories while others will be billeted in public schools in Lingayen and in San Carlos City Elementary School.

The athletes will see action in 20 PNG sporting events that will be held in different venues: Athletics, badminton, boxing, lawn tennis will be held at NRSCC; archery at the Pangasinan National High School; billiards at the Magsaysay Elementary School Gym, Lingayen; chess at the Pangasinan Training and Development Center (PTDC); dance sport at the Sison auditorium; futsal at the Binmaley Catholic School Gym; judo and wrestling at Bataoil Gym on Libsong East in Lingayen; karatedo at Columban College Gym; lawn tennis at  PNP Tennis Center; muay thai and weightlifting at Lingayen Town Plaza; pencat silat at Pangapisan Elementary School Gym; sepak takraw at Baay Elementary School Gym; swimming at San Carlos City swimming pool; taekwondo at Lingayen Central School Gym.
