THE Pangasinan Provincial Police Office (PPPO) is not only preparing for the conduct of the May 9 elections, but also for the tourists expected to flock to the province this summer.

P/ Supt. Jacky Candelario, PPPO deputy provincial director for operations, said police assistance hubs and motorist assistance centers will be established in different towns’ major thoroughfares as part of their Oplan Summer Vacation (SumVac) while checkpoints will continue to be set up in the province for the implementation of the gun ban.

Sabay-sabay na ‘yong preparations for election and summer vacation,” said Candelario, during the KBP forum last week.

He said, at least four checkpoints are conducted daily in every town, two of which are provincial-initiated while two are station-initiated. The frequency will be increased once the start of the local campaign period starts on March 25.

Candelario said the conduct of checkpoints has helped lower the commission of crimes in the province including shooting incidents and robberies.

“The province averaged at 78-80 crimes per week, now it’s down to about 30 incidents weekly,” he said.

He also urged the public to report any improper conduct of checkpoints to the PPPO.

Meanwhile, Candelario said almost 25% of the towns in the province have already held their covenant signing among their political candidates.

The PPPO has directed chiefs of police in all towns to organize covenant signing to further ensure peaceful and fair elections in Pangasinan. (Johanne R. Macob)
