DAGUPAN CAMPAIGN

ONLY the candidates of the Liberal Party (LP) led by Mayor Belen Fernandez and two independent bets for councilor participated in the peace covenant signing initiated by the Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting (PPRCV) on March 12 at the parish hall of St. John Metropolitan Cathedral.

The signing took place while the candidates were attending “Tipanan” forum, an initiative of Archbishop Socrates Villegas and the local PPRCV headed by Rev. Fr. Hernan Caronongan.

Archbishop Villegas is also spearheading the campaign or one “One Good Vote” among the Catholic faithful.

Absent were candidates of the Nacionalista Party led by Celia Lim and her son Brian, who are running for mayor and vice mayor, respectively, and their three or four candidates for councilor.

Brian Lim is the incumbent vice mayor of the city seeking a second term of office.

No explanation was given by the NP candidates for their failure to attend the event despite the notices given them.

Those who signed the peace covenant, along with Mayor Fernandez, were Bryan Kua, the LP vice mayoralty candidate, as well as Jose Netu Tamayo, Marvin Fabia, Alvin Coquia, Jeslito Seen and Maybelyn Fernandez, all re-electionists; and Dennis Canto, Fe Vidal, Mark Tan, Raisa Vargas and Fred Quinto Jr.

The signing was witnessed by City Election Officer Ericson Oganiza, P/Supt. Christopher Abrahano, PPRCV officials, and Liga ng mga Barangay president Lino Fernandez.

Abrahano hailed the signing of the covenant and assured that Dagupan City is peaceful and does not expect any violence to happen during the election.

However, Dagupan City is an independent component city of Pangasinan which is one of the provinces declared by the Philippine National Police as one of the country’s Election Watch List Areas (EWAs) mainly because of recorded violence in past elections.

Meanwhile, City Election Officer Oganiza warned that all campaign materials posted outside designated poster areas and posters with illegal sizes will be removed once the local campaign period starts on March 25. (Leonardo Micua)
