A DEPARTMENT OF FISHERY

PANGASINAN fisherfolk now feel assured by the pledge of Sen. Alan Cayetano that a department solely dedicated to address the concerns of small fishers to protect the country’s marine and aquatic resources will be created if the tandem of Mayor Rodrigo Duterte and Sen. Cayetano will be elected to the country’s top elective posts.

The local fisherfolk were elated on hearing the news report that the senator reiterated the proposal, one of the latest “bold solutions” unveiled by the Duterte-Cayetano tandem during the duo’s “Ronda Serye” listening tour with fishermen in Ormoc City on Tuesday.

Mr. Cayetano said a Department of Fisheries, separate from the Department of Agriculture (DA), to give the fishery sector in the country a more focused attention and reduce red tape which greatly contributes to corruption.

Sharing the same thought with the Ormoc fisherfolk, he said the present DA is huge, prone to corruption and unmanageable and for a country surrounded by water, proper management of aquatic resources should be a priority, both for food security and livelihood improvement.

Additionally, the senator said expanded credit instruments for fisherfolk will be extended to provide them the needed capital to sustain their livelihood and protect them from 5-6 loan sharks. #
