Farmers finish course on corn production

MANGALDAN— There were 2,107 agricultural extension workers (AEWs) and farmers from 34 towns in Pangasinan that received their certificates of completion “Sanayang Pang-radyo sa Agrikultura” on sustainable corn production on Wednesday, a school-on-the-air (SOA) course.

According to Maricel Dacapias, information officer of the Agricultural Training Institute – Regional Training Center 1 (ATI-RTC 1), the recent SOA course classes, which ran from October 13, 2015 – March 2, 2016 in partnership with concerned local government units and a local radio network, were aired every Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5:00-6:00 in the morning.

The course participants were from the towns of Anda, Alaminos City, Dasol, Mabini, Sual, and Burgos (District 1); Bugallon, Lingayen, Mangatarem, and Aguilar (District 2); Calasiao, San Carlos City, Sta. Barbara, Mapandan, and Malasiqui (District 3); San Jacinto, Mangaldan, Manaoag, and San Fabian (District 4); Laoac, Bautista, Binalonan, Sison, Alcala, Urdaneta City, and Pozorrubio (District 5); and San Manuel, Asingan, Rosales, Sta. Maria, Tayug, Natividad, San Quintin, and Umingan (District 6).

Top course achievers were Marite Omolida of Manaoag, James Ryan Yadao of Binalonan, and Janice Sumio of Pozorrubio.

Meanwhile, the three towns with the highest number of graduates were Sta. Maria with 224 graduates, Sta. Barbara with 187, and San Carlos City with 180.

This year’s SOA graduating ceremony was held jointly with the graduation of 38 Farmers Field School on Integrated Crop Management on Corn cum Good Agricultural Practices.

Senator Cynthia Villar, who served as the event’s guest speaker, commended the DA, particularly the ATI-RTC1, for coming up with an ‘innovative’ program.
