Poultry owners urged: Adopt biosecurity
NEWCASTLE VIRUS
LINGAYEN –Poultry owners in the province were asked to adopt biosecurity in their farms to prevent their fowls from getting infected with Newcastle disease virus that rages in many poultry houses all over Luzon.
The call was made by Rosendo So, chair of the partylist Abono and head of the Samahan ng Industriya at Agrikultura (Sinag) during a breakfast media forum at the President last week.
So, an engineer, suggested to poultry raisers to devote one whole month of disinfecting their poultry houses after every broilers’ production cycle, noting that one production cycle is 90 days.
He believes that the New Castle virus was brought in by fighting cocks, many of which were imported, and slowly transmitted to fowls being raised in poultry houses.
However, he said the poultry raisers should still count their blessings since the Philippines is the only country in Asia not affected by the more dreaded Avian Flu.
The Newcastle virus may impact on the position of the country in the coming Asian economic integration, Engr. So said.
But So said through biosecurity there will be no room for the Newcastle virus to spread. (Leonardo Micua)
