Pangasinan tops in arresting gun ban violators – Police
LA UNION – Violators of gun ban in the region already reached 549 persons arrested while 119 firearms were confiscated in its overall focused police operations and all-out campaign in connection with Secure and Fair Election (SAFE) 2016 since the start of the election period from January 10 to February 23 this year.
This was reported by Chief Supt. Ericson Velasquez, Regional Director of Police Regional Office 1, during the meeting of the Regional Joint Security Control Center (RJSCC) held at the Concord Building at Camp Brig General Oscar Florendo on February 24.
The RJSCC is composed of the police, military and the Department of Justice and the Commission on Elections tasked to assess, monitor and act on any problem relative to peace and order situation in connection with the coming election.
Velasquez said that of the four provinces in Region 1, the Pangasinan Provincial Police Office registered the highest number of arrests with 278 persons, followed by Ilocos Sur PPO, 102; La Union PPO, 96; and Ilocos Norte PPO, 73.
All the suspects were collared through the implementation of checkpoints, search warrants served in the houses of suspects, warrants of arrests of wanted persons and when policemen responded to crime incidents.
Pangasinan also leads in the number of firearms seized at 62, followed by La Union, 21, Ilocos Sur, 23; and Ilocos Norte, 13.
“This accomplishment was the result of our earnest commitment and concerted efforts in the implementation of our continuing and intensified police operations in partnership with other law enforcement agencies,” Velasquez said.
Velasquez reminded his field commander to be ready for any eventualities and prepare for contingency measures for SAFE 2016.
Meanwhile, the region’s implementation of “Oplan Katok” where lawmen check status of the firearms of originally licensed gun holders who failed to renew their licenses, led the police to 1,869 gun holders with the reminder to renew their Licenses to Own and Possess Firearms (LTOPF).
Based on records, a total of 84 political candidates and 265 civilians have deposited their firearms with the police as a result thereof and strict implementation of the election gun ban. (Leonardo Micua)
