Local candidates begin peace covenant signing
ALAMINOS CITY –Opposing local candidates in fifteen communities already held a ‘Peace Covenant’ signing for peaceful and credible elections on May 9.
P/Chief Inspector Michael Grona, head of the Police Community Relations of the Pangasinan Provincial Police Office (PPPO), told The PUNCH that fourteen towns and one city out of 44 towns and four cities in the province already had their covenant signing for peaceful polls.
These were held in Labrador, Rosales, Anda, Aguilar, Mangatarem, Tayug, Basista, Umingan, San Quintin and Alaminos City.
The peace pact signing was also held in the towns of Burgos and Balungao on February 25 and in Infanta, Bugallon and Asingan towns on February 26.
Grona added they intend to finish the peace pact signing of the remaining towns and cities before the start of the campaign period for local candidates.
On Wednesday, a Unity Walk participated in by rival candidates in Alaminos City started in front of the City Hall and ended at the Don Enrique Braganza Complex where a Holy Mass and short program were held.
Fr. Melchor Braga of the St. Joseph Parish asked the candidates: to extend selfless public service, to become servants of the people and to remember the poor in all their undertakings.
Officials from the Philippine National Police, Commission on Elections, Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting, Department of Interior and Local Government, Department of Education, among others witnessed the covenant signing.
The candidates who signed the covenant for peace and cooperation pledged to focus their campaign on platforms of government, to refrain from attacking the personal lives of fellow candidates, avoid any resort to violence and employment of armed group, avoid vote-buying, election frauds, and use of threats, among others.
