MORE ROAD-WIDENING PROJECTS

LINGAYEN–More decades-old trees along the province’s roads and highways are expected to be cut and felled in the months ahead.

This became a certainty after the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) announced it will continue to implement more highway widening projects in various parts of the province.

Among these is the road widening project along the Dagupan-San Fernando, La Union provincial road in Pangasinan where many trees are found to have been planted on locations that have encroached on many established right-of-ways.

The others are the Urdaneta-Lingayen road via Sta. Barbara, Calasiao, Dagupan and Binmaley, the Romulo Highway from Mangatarem to Lingayen and the Rosales to Umingan Road all of which are lined with aged trees, some half-century and century old.

The widening projects were bared in a memorandum submitted by the Community Environment and Natural Resources Officer Celso Salazar to the Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) informing the latter of the application for permit by DPWH to cut trees along the Dagupan-San Fernando provincial road.

Also being widened is the Bonuan Road up to junction in San Fabian where some trees also need to be cut as they are within the road right of way while widening had just been completed along the San Carlos City to Manat Junction in Binmaley.

CENRO Salazar’s memorandum obviously seeks the endorsement of the SP on the tree-cutting permit being applied for by DPWH.

Meanwhile, the DPWH applied for another tree cutting permit from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) as in the case of the widening of the Manila North Road from Carmen, Rosales to Sison town. (Leonardo Micua)
