IF the plans of the Department of Education’s (DepEd) Dagupan City Division and the Dagupan City government are approved by DepEd, future students of public and private schools in the city will be given the opportunity to learn the history and culture of Dagupan.

The proposal of DepEd Dagupan City Division is set to submit two modules on Dagupan history and culture to DepEd’s Central Office for integration in the curriculum for elementary and high school students.

According to Froserfina Bravo, officer-in-charge at the schools division as superintendent of DepEd Dagupan City, the two modules prepared by the Dagupan City Historical and Cultural Commission, teachers and city historians, will be integrated into the Araling Panlipunan (social studies) subjects of the Grades 3 and 7 in the city.

“Upon the approval of the Central Office, we will launch it for integration in our curriculum,” she said.

The two modules are initially written in the Filipino language, but Bravo said a Pangasinan version will eventually be prepared.

“We will continue writing more modules,” added Bravo, citing the need to promote the teaching of culture among today’s youth.

A similar proposal to include the study of the Pangasinan history in the province’s curriculum initiated by the Pangasinan Historical and Cultural Commission, is pending before DepEd.

Vice Governor Jose Ferdinand Calimlim Jr., said the Pangasinan History book is unlike other educational materials because it discusses the province’s evolution in its entirety. (Johanne Macob)
