Comelec optimistic about credible elections
SUCCESSFUL MOCK POLLS
IF the recent successful holding of mock elections in Pangasinan is any indication, Pangasinenses can look forward to a peaceful and credible elections in May 9.
The Commission on Elections said from the casting of votes to counting and transmission of ballots, the mock elections in Pangasinan last Saturday went smooth sailing and was generally successful.
“No problem encountered with the vote counting machine,” outgoing provincial election supervisor Marino Salas told the Philippine Information Agency.
Salas said results of the mock polls held in the cities of Alaminos and Dagupan were transmitted without hitches from the precincts to the city board of canvassers, the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas and to the central server.
The Comelec conducted mock elections in 40 locations nationwide, including four barangays in Pangasinan in preparation for the national and local polls on May 9.
Lawyer Julius Torres, newly-assigned director of Comelec in the Ilocos, said the mock elections aimed to simulate the actual procedures on the election day itself – from deployment, voting and consolidation to the transmission of the votes.
In Region I, only the province of Pangasinan was chosen as a venue for the mock elections. The simulated polls took place in two barangays each – one in poblacion area and one far-flung village – in the cities of Alaminos and Dagupan.
In Alaminos City, elementary schools in Linmansangan and Poblacion served as polling venues while Pugaro Elementary School and West Central Elementary School in Barangay Poblacion were utilized as voting areas here.
Meanwhile, Salas said the province is fortunate for having been chosen as a venue of the simulated polls and the launching of the “One Good Vote” campaign of the Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting, consultation for mall voting and the last leg of the Presidential Debate.
He said the next stage in the preparation for the upcoming elections is the training of election officers in Pangasinan who will train in March some 5, 684 public school teachers who will serve as members of the Board of Election Inspectors.
Salas will be assigned in Ilocos Norte replacing Alipio Castillo III effective February 16. La Union Provincial Election Supervisor Joel Gines will take over the province of Pangasinan. (AMM/PIA-1, Pangasinan)
