Capitol set to launch more agri projects
PHILIPPINE RURAL DEVELOPMENT PROJECT
LINGAYEN– The provincial government, in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture (DA), will soon implement the Philippine Rural Development Project (PRDP) and its sub-projects for the benefit of the agricultural and fishery sector.
Last February 15, 2016, the provincial board passed a resolution authorizing Governor Amado Espino Jr. to sign a memorandum of agreement with the DA.
Philippine Rural Development Program is a poverty reduction and agriculture and fisheries development program of the DA, in partnership with local government units that aims to improve income and productivity of rural poor and indigenous communities in the country.
It is designed to establish the government platform for a modern, climate-smart and market-oriented agri-fishery sector by providing key infrastructure, facilities, technology, and information that will raise incomes, productivity, and competitiveness in the countryside.
PRDP’s specific objectives include the raising of every farmer’s income by at least 5%, the income of targeted beneficiaries of enterprise development by 30%, the value of annual marketed output by 7%, and the number of farmers and fishermen with improved access to DA services by 20%.
It is supported by the Adaptable Loan Program (ALP) funded by the World Bank’s International Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the national government and local government units to assist farmers in the province’s 48 towns.
PRDP has two components: the infrastructure development (I-Build), which will take up 65% of the P27-billion national budget, and the interprise development (I-Reap).
According to provincial agriculturist Dalisay Moya, the PRDP may include farm to market roads and short bridges and rural enterprises.
Priority commodities include peanuts, mango, onions, and goat, she added. (Johanne Macob)
