PHO lists 125 injured by firecrackers

LINGAYEN– The Provincial Health Office (PHO) here recorded a 40% decrease in the number of injuries that resulted from lighting of firecracker while there were two victims who sustained gunshot wounds due to stray bullets as of January 3.

Toddler loses right hand

LINGAYEN—An 11-month old baby boy became the youngest victim of firecracker-related injury whose right hand was amputated, report from the Provincial Health Office said.

A whistle bomb lighted by the boy’s neighbor went wayward and hit him while he was being held by his dad inside the veranda of their residence in Barangay Pasibi East, Urbiztondo town on Jan. 2.

He suffered blasting injury in his right hand and corneal injury. He was initially rushed to the Pangasinan Provincial Hospital (PPH) in San Carlos City and transferred to Region 1 Medical Center in Dagupan City where his hand was amputated. (Tita Roces)

Reports from PHO’s Iwas Paputok campaign indicate that there were 150 cases recorded this 2015-2016 celebration compared to 248 cases last year.

The two unidentified victims of stray bullets caused by indiscriminate firing were in Bayambang, a 34-year old male, and in Mangaldan, a 42-year old male. Both are in stable condition.

Of the 125 cases, 119 victims were males and only six were females. Affected were from four months old to 61 years old.

Provincial Health Officer Dr. Anna De Guzman said firecracker piccolo remained as the top culprit, resulting in 34 incidents.

The other firecrackers that caused injuries were 5star (7), boga (4), pill box (6), bawang (10), powder pallet (1), jumbo firecracker (1), kwitis (16), fountain (7), whistle bomb (20), pla-pla (2), torpedo (2), dynamite (1), baby rocket (1), luces (8), yakult (2), and triangle (5), Judas belt)(1).

Other top firecrackers used by the victims were boga, lusis, and kwitis among others.

CARTOONnews-160103Majority or 108 of the victims were active victims or those who lit the firecrackers themselves while 42 were passive victims.

Fortunately, most injuries were burns that did not require amputation of hands, fingers or feet, or surgery to treat serious eye or face injuries.

In Urdaneta City, two women where shot by a drunken man that led to the death of one, Lyka Guido, while being treated at the Urdaneta City District Hospital where her companion, Rosemarie Guido Clune, 24, was also treated of bullet wounds and is now in stable condition.

They were shot by one Noel Estanilo, alias Mario, who used a carbine in shooting the two.

Investigation showed Estanilo was celebrating New Year in the compound of the victims when he became waywardly and started throwing empty beer bottles. He was pacified by the victims and left.

Unknown to the two victims, Estanilo left angry and went home to get his carbine. When he returned to the victims’ compound, he fired upon the two victims and later fled with his firearm.

In Dagupan City, the Region 1 Medical Center in Dagupan registered 26 victims of New Year revelry-related incidents, including 16 victims of vehicular accidents, most of whom were under the influence of liquor.

The 26 victims included Trinidad Lazaro, 69, of Dewey Street in Binalonan, who suffered an abrasion in the right arm caused by a bullet fired by an unidentified person who discharged his firearm indiscriminately at about 7:00 p.m. of Dec. 31.

The other was Marlon Samson, 24, who was shot in the stomach by unidentified persons on board a black Pajero SUV while walking in front of Nepo Mall on Arellano Street at 2:45 am of Jan. 1. (Leonardo Micua)
