PANGASINAN LOWER BY 22%
THE regional director of the Department of Health (DOH) in Region 1 reported a 25.5% decrease of firecracker-injured victims, with 280 cases monitored from Dec. 21 to Jan. 5, compared to 376 last year.
Dr. Myrna Cabotaje, however, told local newsmen in Thursday’s KBP Forum here, that most of the victims this year are younger. Those less than 10 years old comprise 39 percent of the total number of the injured, she said.
The youngest victim was eight months old in Region 1, she added.
Pangasinan, being the biggest in area and population, recorded the highest number of victims with 59 percent, followed by Ilocos Sur with 22 per cent, La Union 12 percent and Ilocos Norte seven percent.
She pointed out that there were six cases of amputation of fingers, considered the region’s worst so far although Cabotaje noted that there are more fireworks display this time than lighted firecrackers.
PANGASINAN
Meanwhile, Dr. Cielo Almoite of the Provincial Health Office of Pangasinan reported in the same forum that there were 209 cases compared to previous year’s 256 during the New Year revelry.
The youngest victim in Pangasinan was about one year old while the oldest was 74, she added.
About 71 percent of the victims were active which means they did the lighting of firecrackers themselves, while 29 percent were passive, she added.
Both Cabotaje and Almoite warned firecracker-injured victims who did not seek medical treatment of possible effects of deadly tetanus.
Meanwhile, P/Superintendent Ferdinand de Asis, provincial police spokesman, said the reported stray bullet incidents in Bayambang, Binalonan and Mangaldan are being investigated. (Tita Roces)
