Leni: “I’m running scared”
DESPITE obtaining the highest gain in the latest Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey, Rep. Leni Robredo, the Liberal Party’s vice presidential bet, said she continues to remain running scared.
“Parati ako bothered, running scared ako,” Robredo told newsmen after she graced the opening of the First Children Summit on Health in Dagupan City last week.
Ms. Robredo said she is well aware from the very start, that she is the least popular among the vice presidential bets and the ‘scare’ is what keeps her motivated to go around the country to introduce herself.
“Lahat ng kalaban ko senador, ako lang ‘yong lokal. Talagang kailangan ng extra effort para magpakilala…” she added.
The administration’s vice presidential bet, however, recalled that she and her husband, late Interior and Local Government Secretary Jessie Robredo, have never fought an easy election battle.
She said, “Lahat ng laban namin ganito, mahihirap, kami parati ang dehado… pero dun naman nag uumpisa yung pagpupursige.”
Ms. Robredo, is currently the representative of the Third District of Camarines Sur.
In the SWS survey conducted last Dec. 12 to 14 with 1,200 respondents nationwide, Rep. Robredo gained seven percent, from 12% in the previous survey to 19%, tying with Senator Ferdinand Marcos Jr. in the second place among the vice presidential bets.
The seven-point rise was the highest among the vice presidential bets.
Ms. Robredo, who used to work as a Public Attorneys Office lawyer, reiterated her call that the constituency should be seen not only as beneficiaries but partners in development.
She stressed that governance can be more efficient if the people are involved in the planning and implementation of programs and the government supporting their ideas, just like what her husband initiated in Naga City as mayor.
The partnership of the government with the ordinary people through the establishment of the Naga City People’s Council has turned the City from being fourth class to becoming first class.
Robredo said she intends to replicate the collaborative system of governance in their city initiated by her husband- the full disclosure policy, citizen’s charter, and people participation in the preparation of budget bill-in the rest of the country by seeking to institutionalize the bottoms up budgeting (BUB) program of the national government even in the barangay level.
