NATIONAL DEWORMING PROGRAM

THE public school pupils from kindergarten to Grade VI in Region 1 that number 719,492 will be benefited by the National Deworming Program set on January 27 to be implemented jointly by the Department of Health and the Department of Education.

Department of Health Regional Director Myrna Cabotaje said the one-day deworming program will cover pupils aged five to 12 years and clarified that it is separate from the community-based deworming program going to be undertaken by DOH through the Rural Health Units (RHUs) and the Local government Units (LGUs) which targets children from two to four years old and who are enrolled in day care centers.

Cabotaje told the KBP Forum last week that the school-based deworming program will be implemented in three doses, once every six months.

The National Deworming Program is a follow up to the deworming successfully conducted by DOH and DepEd, in coordination with local government units sometime in October 2015.

She clarified that those who underwent deworming in October must also undergo another deworming on Jan. 27 and six months after to complete the process.

Pupils who will undergo deworming are advised to eat their meals two hours after the process to avoid any side effect.

The DOH regional director called on parents to make their children undergo deworming because parasites in the body are being tagged as factors for low performance by the child in school. (Leonardo Micua)
