Lingayen – The provincial government’s significant contribution to climate change mitigation and ecological protection becomes evident with its Mangrove Reforestation Project (MRP) which now covers a total of 80 hectares planted with various species of nearly 500,000 mangroves which were propagated at the Provincial Mangrove Propagation and Information Center (PMPIC) in Arnedo, Bolinao.

This was based on a report released by the Provincial Agriculture Office (PAO) where it was also noted that the PMPIC, a 2,000 sq. m. facility inaugurated by Governor Amado T. Espino, Jr. in 2008 located within the Bolinao Fish Farm, has already produced nearly 700,000 mangrove tree seedlings since 2007 which were distributed to various sectors and organizations for their mangrove tree-planting activities particularly in foreshore lands, river banks and marine protected areas.

Under the Espino administration, the Bolinao Fish Farm underwent massive rehabilitation to become an effective agricultural facility. It was learned that of the 36 mangrove species in the Philippines, 15 can be found in the mangrove propagation center.

As a kick-off activity for 2016, the PAO distributed about 47,000 mangrove seedlings to 16 groups which include farmers and fisherfolks organizations, barangay councils, municipal aquatic resources management councils, schools, private companies and Philippine Coast Guard during the Massive Distribution of Mangrove Seedlings held at the PMPIC on January 15.

Board Member and Liga ng mga Barangay Provincial President Amado “Pogi” Espino, III, who represented Governor Amado T. Espino in said activity, urged the recipients to continue supporting the environmental projects of the provincial leadership and asked them to encourage the youth to engage in environmental preservation.

“By encouraging them to embrace environmental awareness, they would observe and eventually become fully-aware with what they ought to do for their generation,” BM Espino said as he pointed out that his father, Governor Espino, firmly believes on the indispensable role of the youth in community building.

Sixteen groups that received mangrove seedlings include: Municipal Fishery and Aquatic Resources Management Council (MFARMC) and Barangay Councils of Nayom and Bayambang in Infanta (5,000 pcs.); Mal-ong Barangay Council in Anda (5,000 pcs.); Pangascasan Farmers’ & Fisherfolks’ Association and Philippine Coast Guard in Sual (8,000 pcs.); Baley-a-daan Barangay Council, Baley-a-daan Farmers’ and Fisherfolks’ Association and Pangapisan Integrated School in Alaminos City (6,000 pcs.); Pacific Farm Incorporated (6,000 pcs.); MFARMC, barangay councils of Juan, Macaboboni and Bangan-Oda in Agno (6,000 pcs.); Aporao Fishermen’s Association in Bani (6,000 pcs.) and Maasin Barangay Council in Mangaldan (5,000 pcs.). /MGNOblanca
