MORE MALE RELATIVES TAGGED AS SUSPECTS

LINGAYEN—More children were raped in 2015 than in 2014.

The data released by the Pangasinan Provincial Police Office showed 251 rape cases of children were reported in 2015 compared to only 184 in 2014, or 67 more last year.

P/Superintendent Ferdinand de Asis, head of Police Community Relations, said statistically the number of children raped increased by 36.41 percent

The youngest victim was six years old. Most of the victims were 17 years old.

Among the profiled suspects were the victim’s father, grandfather, uncle, textmate, playmate, cousin, boyfriend and stepfather.

Meanwhile, the number of raped older women last year decreased, from 55 in 2014 to 51 in 2015.

The oldest victim was aged 56. Most of the perpetrators were the victim’s uncle, friend, cousin or no relationship.

The police data released, however, did not include number of cases filed, number of suspects convicted and how many were induced by drug-use.

The rising cases of child rape alerted Fourth District Gina de Venecia when she came face to face with a 17-year old girl from San Carlos City who was repeatedly raped by her uncle since she was in her early teens.

She and former Speaker Jose C. de Venecia as well as their son Christopher visited on January 9 the Haven for Children in Bonuan Binloc which the De Venecia couple built.

The girl, who is one of the wards in the adjacent The Haven for Women, confessed to Mrs. De Venecia that she is now in the women’s facility to escape from his uncle who she said began molesting her at an earlier age.

Dumbfounded by what she heard, Mrs. De Venecia promptly directed the filing of the case against her uncle and she vowed to help her get justice for the crime committed against her.

Interested to help the girl get justice, the congresswoman personally took notes while personally interviewing the teen and assured her that she would coordinate with Third District Rep. Rosemary Baby Arenas so the two of them can work on her case till the perpetrator is arrested, charged and jailed.

When Mrs. De Venecia called and talked to the parents of the girl, she was told that the suspect who was staying in their house is now in hiding. The suspect is the youngest brother of her father.

Meanwhile, Rep. De Venecia asked Aida Rufo, who is in charge of the Haven for Women, now managed by the Department of Social Services and Development (DSWD), to provide maximum protection to the girl and other rape victims in her ward. (Tita Roces/ Leonardo Micua)
