Mayor Belen delivers first State of the Children Report
MAYOR Belen T. Fernandez underscored the effectiveness of the programs in place for children when she delivered her first State of the Children’s Report at West Central 1 Elementary School gym on December 7 on the occasion of the school’s Elementary Week Celebration.
Her report focused on the rights of a child, anti-bullying and on how to take care of children’s health in line with the theme: Tuloy-tuloy ang Unli-serbisyo para sa mga Batang Dagupeño”.
The event will be replicated in four public schools in the city: Tambac Elementary School, Salisay Elementary School, Pugaro Suit Elementary School, and Dagupan City National High School.
For two consecutive years now, the city has been cited the “Most Child-Friendly City” in the region and a contender in the national competition where it placed second in 2014.
The children’s right to survival has been complemented by the city’s Alagang Balon Dagupan that provided 4,200 malnourished children in the barangays, schools and day care centers a 120-day supplemental feeding to combat malnutrition.
The city government also encouraged children to plant vegetables in the schools under the Gulayan sa Paaralan program to sustain the needed nutrients of malnourished children.
In two medical missions, almost 1,000 children were given free circumcision in partnership with the UST Medical Mission team.
Among the projects she cited are the ‘Libreng Paligo’ for children in the barangays as “the biggest innovation” to encourage children to observe and practice proper hygiene;” the ‘BTF Does It’ swimming program for 6,000 children, and to develop their talents in music, 70 children are now being trained as members of the first Balon Dagupan Youth Orchestra while another group of children is being trained to be part of the Balon Dagupan Children’s Choir.
To help further develop children’s reading skill, the city is currently constructing a Library Hub to house around
The city’s Manlingcor ya Kalangweran program also served as an opportunity for children to exercise their participatory rights and be part of the city’s student exchange program with Milpitas City, U.S.A.
“With all these programs in place, ‘Batang Dagupenyo, you are home,” said Ms. Fernandez. (JCB/CIO)
