Pangasinan holds 5th Chess Championship

The provincial government of Pangasinan under the stewardship of Governor Amado T. Espino, Jr. has recognized the winners of the 5th Pangasinan Chess Championships (PCC) held on November 21-22 at the Health and Wellness Center located within the Narciso Ramos Sports and Civic Center (NRSCC), here.
Provincial Sports Director Modesto Operania and Pangasinan Chess League (PCL) President Juan Vicente Sison led the closing ceremonies on November 22 where trophies, medals and cash prizes provided by the provincial government were awarded to the winners of the chess championships.
Romy Fagon, 19, of Urdaneta City bested his opponents to secure the top plum in open division, followed by Verth Alora of Anda (2nd place) and Emmanuel Lomibao (3rd place).

Christian Jake Tomines, 18, from Urdaneta City bagged the first place in the junior division (18 years old and below) with Bryle Gever Vinluan of San Fabian (2nd place) and John Marx Anastacio of Mangaldan (3rd place).
Lingayen local, John Ruiz Bravo, 12, captured the championship in kiddie division (12 years old and below), followed by Dancel Jude Ubando of Dagupan City (2nd place) and John Mark Yanes (3rd place).
Top senior chess player Winifred Boquiren of Malasiqui and top lady chess player Jeane Cardona of Lingayen were also recognized.
Fourth to 15th placers for open and junior divisions and fourth to 10th placers in kiddie division also received cash prizes.
Operania, who noted that the PCC forms part of the annual Pangasinan Chess Festival (PCF) sponsored by the provincial government in partnership with the PCL, thanked the parents of the chess players for being supportive to the interest of their children in playing chess.
Saying that no less than Philippine Grand Master Eugene Torre lauded the conduct of PCF, Operania said that “Pangasinense youth are given opportunities to engage in various programs implemented under the sports development thrust of the Espino administration.
A total of 188 chess players from 21 towns and four cities in the province participated in the 5th PCC.
Component chess tournaments of the PCF include: 5th Pangasinan Age Group Chess Championship (October 10-11); 5th Pangasinan Chess Championship (November 7-8); and 7th Gov. Amado T. Espino, Jr. Cup Open Chess Tournament (December 11-13)./Mark Gerry Naval Oblanca
