Old ‘mañana’ habit strikes again

LAST DAY OF FILING

THE employees of the Provincial Elections Office had mixed feelings about the recent big turnout of voters to beat the deadline for the biometric registration.

They were happy about the turnout, yet dismayed that the late registrants obviously could not kick their mañana habit making them (Comelec employees) work double time to accommodate them.

Lawyer Marino Salas, provincial elections supervisor, noted that up to Oct. 31 voters continue to crowd city and municipal election offices in the province, a situation which is also seen in all provinces in the entire country.

He said that Comelec has given the late registrants more than a year to register and or validate their biometrics yet, they had to wait for the last week and then complain about the long queues.

Salas felt the “habitual last-minuters” finally realized that Comelec was serious about its no-extension policy. “There is no forevermore this time” he intoned and added the registration will close 9:00 p.m. of Oct. 31.

As of Oct. 17, the number of voters needing validation of their biometrics was at 78,000, of which 7,000 are from Dagupan City. (Leonardo Micua)
