Marcos cites barangay workers’ role in national dev’t
URDANETA CITY— “The barangay workers are the face, the frontliners of the government.”
Thus remarked Senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., when he addressed at the Barangay Health Workers (BHWs) Congress in Urdaneta City on Wednesday (October 28).
Mr. Marcos underscored the critical role that barangay workers including the barangay health workers play in the delivery of basic services like health services to the community.
He noted that with the country’s population breaching the 100 million mark, increasing numbers of Filipinos suffering from various health problems and the high cost of medicine and doctor’s fees, the ordinary people depend on BHWs to attend to their health concerns.
However, the aspiring vice president noted that BHWs and the rest of the barangay workers are not getting enough benefits from the government.
As chairman of the Senate Local Government Committee, Mr. Marcos said he has sponsored a bill to ensure retirement benefits for barangay officials and workers, including the BHWs.
Said bill is currently under plenary deliberation in the Senate, he said.
He said, “I assure you that I am giving top priority to this vital legislation so it can be enacted into law as soon as possible.” (Johanne R. Macob)
