Holy Bible translation into Pangasinan celebrated
100th YEAR CELEBRATION
LINGAYEN–The translation of the Holy Bible into the Pangasinan language one hundred years ago was celebrated in Pangasinan on Nov. 7 in a commemorative program at Sison Auditorium sponsored by the Philippine Bible Society (PBS) in coordination with the provincial government.
Dr. Nora G. Lucero, PBS General Secretary, said the first translated Bible book in the Philippines was the Book of Luke which was translated in Pangasinan.
She said it was in 1915 that the translation of the Old and New Testament Pangasinan Bible was completed.
Dr. Edgar Ebajo, PBS publishing manager, said the first chronicled bible translation was in 1896 in Tagalog, then in Bicol, Ilokano, Ilonggo, Hiligaynon, and then Pangasinan, followed by Waray and Ibanag.
The occasion, attended by Archbishop Socrates Villagas of the Lingayen-Dagupan Archdiocese and Bishop Renato Mayugba of the Diocese of Laoag also marked the PBS 116th anniversary.
The joint celebration was led by retired Supreme Court Chief Justice Reynato S. Puno, PBS president and chairman, attended by some 2,000 people from all over Pangasinan.
Gov. Amado T. Espino, Jr, represented by Vice Gov. Jose Ferdinand Calimlim, delivered the welcome remarks. (Leonardo Micua)
