Ex-VM opposes new power plant in Sual

LINGAYEN–The reported plan to put up another coal-fired power plant in Sual with capacity of 600 megawatts by the foreign-owned Trans Asia Oil and Energy Development Corporation in Sual is being opposed by the town’s former vice mayor Alex Rigonan.

He said he and others in the town are opposed to the project since Sual is already hosting the 1,218 megawatt Sual coal fired power plant operated by Team Energy, and will call on the church to actively oppose the project set to be put up in Barangay Baquioen.

Rigonan, who has retired from politics, brushed aside the claim of Mayor Roberto Arcinue that a public hearing was already conducted on the proposed project and the people of Sual agreed with it.

“That public hearing is not enough since most of the people of Sual do not accept another power plant in the town,” said Rigonan.

He said there is already enough pollution in Sual and people also have to think of the future generations’ welfare.

He added that the town needs more investors because some of the investors in the town, like the owners of fish cages who are not from the town, are exploiting the town’s natural resources, giving only a pittance of their huge profits to Sual which is not commensurate to the harm that they bring to the environment in the town.

He said the businessmen from other places simply make the residents their virtual “slaves from sun up to sundown.”

Rigonan said the proposed establishment of a new coal-fired power plant could further bring more damage to the environment and eco-system, leaving nothing for the future to savor and reap. (Leonardo Micua)
