SOME 20 illegal fish pens stocked with milkfish were destroyed by Typhoon “Lando” and were no longer be allowed to be repaired, according to Maximo Solis, head of Task Force Bantay Ilog in Dagupan City.

He said the owners of these structures voluntarily removed their contraptions with the aid of the Task Force Bantay Ilog.

There were other damaged fish pens but their owners managed to quickly repair their structures and prevented the escape of their fishes to the rivers.

These, he said, will be allowed to remain until December 31 only, the final deadline given them by the City Agriculture Office.

Solis also pointed out that the remaining fish pens are small, the biggest of which is 150 square meters, unlike earlier pens demolished that measured more than one hectare in area.

Solis revealed that Task Force Bantay Ilog just demolished three fish pens in Sitio Watac, Mamalingling measuring 6 meters x 7 meters or 42 square meters each, and another one in Salapingao owned by Alejandro de Guzman, president of the Dagupan Fishpond Owners Association measuring 10 meters by 11 meters or 110 square meters.

Monitoring of the rivers is still continuing to ensure that once the milkfish are harvested, demolition immediately takes place. (Leonardo Micua)
