IT’S now business without borders.

This was the message imparted to local businessmen during the seminar organized by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) last week to prepare them for economic trade with the onset of the ASEAN integration.

Senen Briones, senior trade and industry specialist of the DTI’s Marketing Bureau, told his audience during his presentation on “Doing Business with the ASEAN Economic Community” that businessmen must learn to adapt to change and to be flexible with the growing demands of the global market.

He said distances between countries became irrelevant because of free trade agreements and said competition which is ultimately for the benefit of the consumers, will sustain the inflow of investments and promote cross border complementation.

He said ASEAN free trade will eliminate traffic and liberalize restrictions and

the ASEAN Economic Community has four pillars, namely, the creation of a single market and production base, competitive economic region, equitable economic development and integration into the global economy.

DTI Provincial Director Peter Mangabat stressed that the “ASEAN integration will have a big impact on the local economy because all the tariffs are reduced to “zero taxes.”

He said export will be the buzzword and local businessmen must know how to deal with other traders in other nations.

Citing the export of Dagupan bangus (milkfish), he said Thailand is now into bangus production and this is both a threat and a challenge to bangus growers.

While Thailand’s bangus will be competing with Dagupan’s bangus, the situation becomes an opportunity to improve the quality of Dagupan bangus, Mangabat stressed. (Tita Roces)
