IF there is one assurance that the situation in Ilocos Region could not get any worse in the aftermath of ‘Lando,’ it is from the National Food Authority (NFA).

The agency has one million bags of rice available for consumption of people in the region for the next 24 days despite the massive devastation of ready-to-harvest palay over the past week.

NFA Region 1 Director Carlito Co Wednesday said the inventory for the Ilocos region is sufficient even up to the end of the year.

“NFA is ready especially during periods of calamities,” Co said.

He said an assessment by the Department of Agriculture on the extent of damages will further determine if there is even a need to augment its inventory of rice stock noting that about 100,000 bags of imported Vietnam rice are expected to arrive before the end of the month.

The agency said 2,000 bags of both palay and rice were soaked in rain and floodwaters in their warehouse in Barangay Umangan, Managatarem town due to flash floods Monday.

He said rice stocks remain high despite the purchases of local government units for distribution as relief goods. (Tita Roces)
