NFA needs ‘food guardians’
THE National Food Authority (NFA) urged consumers to become “food guardians” to help ensure rice is available, accessible, affordable and safe for the public.
Chona Maramba of NFA-Western Pangasinan said food guardians are needed to promote NFA’s rice sufficiency initiatives like the “Be Riceponsible” campaign that aims to promote the “RICEponsibility” of every Filipino to help the country achieve rice self-sufficiency by not wasting rice.
“Data on rice wastage show that each Filipino wastes two tablespoons of cooked rice daily, which, if not wasted, could result in import savings of P6.2 billion and could feed 2.6 million Filipinos in a year,” Maramba said.
As food guardians, the volunteers must pledge not to waste rice which is the staple food of Filipinos, she told the general assembly of the Pangasinan Association of Government Information Officers (PAGIO) held on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Maramba said NFA has started to buy palay from farmers and
still accepts application and revalidation of farmers’ passbook for individual farmers and farmers’ group to be used in delivering their palay to the food agency. (VHS/AMM/PIA-1, Pangasinan)
