SAN CARLOS CITY—A health official warned the public of leptospirosis after an administrative aide of the local government of Bayambang town recently died of it.  He had a weeklong open wound that worsened when he cleaned part of the town hall enabling bacteria to enter into his body.

Dr. Policarpio Manuel, hospital director of Pangasinan Provincial Hospital here, said the fatality, 59-year old male, was the second fatality of leptospirosis admitted in their hospital.

Manuel said since September 1, there had been seven patients admitted in the PPH for leptospirosis.

The first fatality was in July. The second casualty had been suffering symptoms of leptospirosis like high fever, headache, muscle pain, loss of appetite and his body had turned yellow for one week already but was rushed to PPH already late and died after a day of confinement, Manuel said.

Leptospirosis is spread by contact with fresh water, wet soil or vegetation contaminated by the urine of infected animals. (Tita Roces)
