THE Philippine Electricity Market Corporation (PEMC) held its Knowledge and Capacity Enhancement Training Program for media people last September 11.

Atty. Phillip Adviento, PEMC training and communications manager, said the seminar sought to engage members of the press in an interactive training discussion to understand and appreciate the workings of the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM).

Among the topics discussed included how the WESM works, market development, the distribution charge and other components of the distribution utility electric bill, and the flood forecasting and warning system for dam operations.

The WESM, created by Republic Act 9136, is a centralized venue for buyers and sellers to trade electricity as a commodity where its prices are based on actual use (demand) and availability (supply). It reflects the actual cost of electricity and lowers its price through more efficient production through competition.
