CALASIAO–A 12 year-old Pangasinense won the silver medal, highest win by the Pangasinan team in the recent Thailand Open Karate- do championship held in Huamark Indoor Stadium Bangkok Thailand from July 26 to 30.

Mesina Narayana Rsi Das, a grade six student at Mother Goose Special School System Inc. represented the country in his first international tilt in the Kumite under 14 plus 48 kgs male category, competed against an Indonesian fighter for gold but eventually lost after a tie-breaking decision by the judges.

“We tied the score at 3-3 after the one minute and thirty seconds extension but the judges voted for him”, said Mesina.

He admitted he learned not to be lax and to underestimate his opponent in order to win the gold in his next competitions.

Mesina has earned the moniker ‘Karate Kid’ being one of the four Karate-do fighters in his school.

He already won more 50 medals, 20 were gold since he started competing last 2010.

“Bruce Lee is my idol”, he said.

Mesina fought with 50 Karate-do fighters from the country led by their coach and president of the Philippine Karate-do Federation of the Philippines, Dr. Enrico Vasquez against 31 other countries. Philippines landed fifth in the overall ranking.

“I am happy to have brought pride along with my team to our country in this sports”, Mesina said.

Although, Mesina is focused in his two-hour minimum training on weekends, he maintains an 89% average in his academics.

“Our coach, Dr. Vasquez makes sure we study well and our grades are not failing, it is part of our discipline”, said Mesina.

Mesina is set to compete again with Pangasinan karate-do team in Japan and England this year. (Hilda Austria)
