Forty-seven licensed nurses have been assigned by the Department of Health (DOH) Region 1 to join the workforce of hospitals owned and managed by the provincial government to further reinforce the delivery of public health programs in Pangasinan.

The nurses, who all hail from Pangasinan, were presented to Governor Amado T. Espino, Jr. on August 18 during a courtesy call where the chief provincial executive exhorted them to give the best service and assistance to every Pangasinense needing medical attention.

Governor Espino stressed that they (the nurses) shall actively engage on the over-all effort of his administration to make Pangasinan the ‘Home of Healthiest Filipinos.’

The deployment of nurses in the province, according to Provincial Health Officer Dr. Anna Ma.Teresa de Guzman was DOH’s move to provide support to the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) of the national government.

Of the total number, 32 nurses were assigned in community and district hospitals of the province, seven have joined the DOH provincial office team led by Julia Racquel Rimando-Magalong while eight others were detailed as support staff of the Provincial Health Office (PHO).

“The nurses assist our district field offices in the implementation of public health programs, particularly on Tuberculosis (TB) control and prevention programs, and some were assigned as part of the surveillance team and in data monitoring,” Dr. De Guzman said.

This year cases of infectious diseases including TB, leptospirosis and gastroenteritis have posted a significant decline when compared with the number of cases on the same quarter last year, Dr. De Guzman said, as she pointed out that municipal and city health offices in Pangasinan have been active in the prevention and control of infectious diseases in their respective localities.

It was also learned that hospitals of the provincial government have constantly posted ‘high occupancy rate’ which is attributed to the quality health care services delivered by trained medical experts and nurses, and the improvement of all 14 government-owned hospitals, which now utilize additional modern equipment.

“Awareness at the community level is high, and this really contributes to the effective prevention and control of infectious diseases,” she said. /MGNO
