Capitol mulls operating own radio station
LINGAYEN– The provincial government of Pangasinan is considering to own and operate its own radio station.
Last week, the Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) discussed at length the resolution granting Governor Amado Espino Jr. the authority to negotiate with the Philippine Broadcasting Service- Bureau of Broadcast Services (PBS-BBS) and the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) for the possible establishment of an FM radio station in the province.
The discussion of the resolution, sponsored by Board Member Sheila Marie Perez-Galicia, which underscored the importance of information in a developing province like Pangasinan and that modernization can only be achieved through effective communication, was, however, tabled for further discussion.
Board Member Alfonso Bince Jr. asked that the NTC and the PBS be invited for the Question Hour, to enlighten the SP on their policies on the use of radio station.
As envisioned, the provincial government will operate an FM radio station that will be set up inside the Capitol Complex and will go on air for 24 hours a day for seven days a week.
Galicia said the radio station can be a good “tool for promotion of good governance” by keeping the public informed since it will be one of the main sources of information for the people especially for public advisories in times of calamities.
According to provincial information officer Orpheus Velasco, the planned radio station will be a co-production of the provincial government and the national government.
It will be governed by PBS policies, to ensure that the programming will be insulated from any political agenda. (Johanne Macob)
