Bantay Ilog TF head: No illegal fish pens in Pugaro

THE head of the Bantay Ilog Task Force formed by Mayor Belen Fernandez said that the 50 fish pens mentioned by Kagawad Efren Bautista of Pugaro during a public hearing conducted in the Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) last June 30 were not fish pens but actually fish cages.

Maximo Solis, who assumed as head of the task force in March 2014, said these are actually fish cages stocked with mixed bangus and malaga which will soon be allowed under a proposed ordinance submitted to the SP by Councilor Jeslito Seen.

These are small fish cages, the largest size of which is 10 x 10 meters, compared to one hectare fish pens owned by Darius Angeles which was removed by Task Force Bantay Ilog.

The owners of the fish cages have already been notified that once the pending ordinance amending the city’s fisheries ordinance is passed, the fish cages have to be removed to enable the efficient implementation of the provisions of the new ordinance.

Presently, all the fish cages in the city’s rivers are still without the required Aquatic Lease Agreement.

“These are not 50 fish pens as mentioned by the kagawad. Ibinilang na yong mga fish cages na may lamang high-value fishes,” Solis said.

“Matagal nang nabawasan ang mga fish pens dito. And as a matter of fact, we are in Tanap River demolishing another newly constructed fish pen owned by a certain Barak,” Solils said.
