59 villages submerged by monsoon rains
LAST Sunday morning was a hot sunny day, but it was unlike all other sunny days in the past in Pangasinan.
Residents in 59 barangays woke up to see their roads and homes submerged as high as 7 feet caused by the incessant rains brought by the southwest monsoon (habagat).
The western town of Bani has been placed under state of calamity with 500 families affected. At least 200 families were brought to seven evacuation centers.
Mayor Gwen Yamamoto said 90 percent of her town’s agriculture areas were destroyed.
Meanwhile, the non-stop heavy rains for past five days also triggered tornadoes in the towns of Sual and Anda destroying 31 houses. Landslides were also reported in the coastal towns of Bolinao and Bani.
In Calasiao town, at least 15 of its 24 barangays were reported to be flooded. The local government suspended classes in pre-elementary to high school.
In Dagupan City, residents in six heavily flooded barangays –Lasip Chico, Lasip Grande, Pogo Grande, Malued, Bacayao Sur and Bacayao Norte – had to wade through knee-deep to waist-deep water. Trucks, kuliglig and padyak’ ruled the streets in these areas.
The Dagupan CDRRMO reported moderate flooding in the villages of Pogo Chico, Lucao and Herrero Perez.
The People’s Astrodome was converted into an evacuation center since Saturday last week to house some 21 families.
Engr. Virgilio Garcia of the National Power Corporation, said water level at the San Roque Dam in San Manuel town only reached 270.86 meters above sea level (masl), way below its spilling level of 280 masl. (VHS/PIA-1Pangasinan)
