5 dead, P124 million damages to agri, infra reported
15-DAY MONSOON RAINS
LINGAYEN—P124 million in estimated damages to agriculture and infrastructures in Pangasinan was reported as a result of the prolonged monsoon rains last week that caused severe flooding in 11 towns and cities.
Five persons were also reported to have died as a result of the monsoon rains in separate parts of Pangasinan. These did not include the five who died during the onslaught of both Typhoons “Egay” and “Falcon”, two of whom were missing.
This was bared by Avenix Arenas, spokesperson of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) who said that few towns have yet to report their respective damages.
Meanwhile, Dalisay Moya, officer-in-charge at the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist, estimated the damages to agriculture at P22.5 million, comprising of P2.5 million on riceplants planted in 233 hectares of land, P4.1 million in fisheries and the rest on high-value crops such as vegetables submerged in floodwater for days and died.
The damaged rice plants were from Infanta, Bugallon, Calasiao, Mapandan, Sta. Barbara, Mangaldan, Villasis, Urdaneta City, Alaminos City, Agno, Aguilar, Pozorrubio, Basista and Asingan.
The infrastructures that were damaged included the scouring of dikes, provincial roads that were underwater and developed potholes and projects damaged by landslide such as the one that happened in Bolinao.
The earth dike protecting Barangay Maningding, Sta. Barbara from the rampaging water of the Sinocalan River had to be fortified with sandbags when it was scoured.
The flood victims who died were T-Jay Orteras, of Catungi, Bolinao, six month old who was pinned down when their house was crushed by a landslide; Marlon Lapena, 52 who drowned in Camantiles, Urdaneta City; Vince Abrey delos Santos Mendoza, 15, who drowned in Paitan East, Sual; Regine Velasco, 16, who drowned in Sitio Cabaruan, Banaoang Calasiao; and Nestor Reyes, 49, who was missing and believed to have drowned in San Ramon, Manaoag. As of July 24, only 28 barangays remain flooded. These are 18 in Calasiao, three each in San Fabian and Bolinao, two in Sta. Barbara and one on Asingan.
In Dagupan City, 12 barangays remain flooded as of last Thursday that led 65 families or 260 persons to be evacuated to the City Astrodome.
Only the towns of Bani and Calasiao have declared a state of calamity.
Dagupan City declared a partial state of calamity for 19 of its 31 barangays.
The rains have finally stopped but water from upstream continues to cascade down to Pangasinan. (Leonardo Micua)
